Should Republicans Fight Gas Tax Renewal?

As it is the issue of increased energy prices is an easy one to demagouge with simplistic slogans (“Drill Baby Drill”) and even more simplistic ideas (anyone remember when Hillary Clinton and John McCain came up with the idiotic idea of a Federal Gas Tax Holiday during the 2008 campaign?). It’s not at all hard to see the argument over the the gas tax being boiled down to the slogan Barack Obama wants to increase the price of gas . Given that renewing the gas tax is going to require affirmative action on the part of Congress (rather than legislation to block it) I’d already say that the forces that come out against it are going to have the advantage here, especially given the partisan make up of Congress and the difficulty of getting anything through the Senate. There are, in fact, some remarkable similarities between the just concluded debt ceiling showdown and the showdown that could result over renewing the gas tax. Like increasing the debt ceiling, the renewal of the Federal Gasoline Tax has been a fairly non-controversial action in the past. Republicans and Tea Party folks can advocate this on two grounds. The first, of course, is Federalism. It is inefficient and counterproductive to route all these dollars through the earmark meat-grinder of Washington when states are more than capable of maintaining their own roads. Simply put, outside of direct Interstate Highway planning (which may have interstate commerce implications), the Federal government need not be involved in intrastate maintenance. For a party that has paid so much lip service to the earmark issue, this is a natural progression.

I’m a power tool nut and have many tools from brands such as Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita, Ryobi, and Craftsman just to name a few.
When I received the Dewalt 12-Volt Max 1/4-Inch Impact Driver Kit, it was just in time for me to test it on a home project that I’ve been planning. The project is a heavy, free-hanging, collapsible work table that I wanted to attach to the garage wall. Because of its weight, I decided to use 6″ lag screws to attach the table to the wall studs. To my delight, this compact driver sank those lag screws into the studs with ease. I should also note that I first tried my 12-Volt Makita driver for this task, and the Makita couldn’t handle it. With that said, the Dewalt driver will be my go-to driver from now on.

I have a high end small impact by another major manufacture about 7 years old with new batteries. This tool is lighter, stronger and a plus to use with the LED lights. The Lithium batteries are a super big plus. The other tool may have a slightly higher build quality but it does not matter in real world use. I have one complaint about all of these like tools by all the manufactures – they each include these nylon bags for the tools which I believe are cluttering up the landfills. Most of us do not need all these bags.
I don’t like to spend a lot of money on power tools, because I don’t do as many DIY projects as I used to. And in my experience, the cordless tools either don’t have enough power, or they have a battery pack that weighs a ton. Dewalt has finally found a way to build a lightweight, powerful tool that’s easy and comfortable to use. This is the first impact driver I have owned, and I put it to work on two projects that I knew would be tough. I installed a pull latch on my cedar closet door, which is the heaviest, densest wood I have ever worked with – it eats drill bits for breakfast. The Dewalt had no trouble extracting the old screws and installing the new ones. I was amazed. The second project was installing a rain gauge on my fence post — also very dense wood. Again, the screws went in with ease. Both of these projects were seemingly simple, but challenging with other power tools I’ve used.
