Don't forget your veggies this summer
Editor's note: This is part one of a three-part series on keeping your children fit, mentally and physically, during their summer vacation.
For eight weeks this summer, the cafeteria in Ben Chambers Elementary is bustling with activity despite school not being in session.
Children in the annual BOPIC (Building Our Pride in Chambersburg) program delight in cafeteria treats, but they're not the only ones to benefit.
Food gets transported for the Migrant Education Program in Scotland Elementary, the Shippensburg and Chambersburg Boys and Girls clubs, the YMCA-sponsored Sam's Club program and programs hosted by the Chambersburg Recreation Department.
All told, between 450 and 500 children are served two meals daily.
Participants chow down on a chicken gordita and chocolate milk one day and perhaps spaghetti and white milk the next for lunch.
At breakfast, The Nutrition Program could serve up cereal with three choices of juice or even a sausage and egg sandwich.
It's similar to school-year selections without the variety of daily choices.
"We try to stay with the same foods," said Sam Beepath, cafeteria supervisor of the program. "We pick what we find to be the most popular choices."
But not every child in Franklin County this summer has lunch or breakfast with all the major food groups in mind to fill nutritional needs.
Many families need to find that balance for three meals a day, seven days a week over summer break.
Food is fuel
Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture scrapped its long-standing food pyramid description for healthy eating in favor of the new "Choose My Plate."
Chambersburg Area School District this year will display Choose My Plate flags throughout its cafeterias with helpful tips in the primary food groups of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and protein.
Tips include a switch to skim or 1 percent milk, making at least half of your grains whole grains, choosing a variety of foods with protein benefits and keeping cut-up vegetables handy for quick snacks.
The program also suggests reductions in foods high in solid fats, added sugars and salt. Instead of adhering to calorie guidelines, Choose My Plate encourages a person to eat the right amount of calories for you -- enjoy food, but eat less.
"Food is what the body uses for fuel," said Nicole Patience, a registered dietitian at Temple University. "It helps keep energy for your day and helps our brain with thinking as well.

The ringing school bell signaling commencement of summer vacation triggers a process important to pretty much every parent: finding ways to keep kids from forgetting all the good things they’ve perfected throughout the last term. Regrettably, the fact that math-related pursuits won’t receive great priority throughout the summer, quite a few children will suffer a loss of much of the prior term’s math understanding.
So what can parents do to help their kids preserve, or maybe improve, summer math skills while still keeping them content throughout school vacation? Here are several tested ways of ensuring that your child does not need to learn math from the start when school kicks off in the fall. Stop the Worry Regarding New Grade Promotion
One summer when my daughter was seven, I sensed that something was bothering her. She confessed that she was worried about moving into third grade. Quite a few children will require extra practice and reassurance once they go from primary grades K-2 into the middle grades, or from elementary school to middle school. I took my daughter to a teacher’s retail store and we bought several arithmetic workbooks and math learning aids best suited for third grade. She was incredibly relieved to see that the content was not as difficult as she had believed and that she was troubling herself needlessly. I made it easier for her with some of the study lessons and she was able to take pleasure in the rest of her summer.
With home pc learning programs it’s even easier to advance a grade. Lessons start off easy and build in difficulty. Quite a few packages even include instruction for multiple grades so it’s easy to achieve confidence by conquering more advanced lessons. Road Sign Shapes and Geometry
There’s far more to primary school math than addition and subtraction. The geometric shapes experienced in day to day life help youngsters make geometry real. Enjoying a trip to the shore or holiday resort? Play a game along with your youngster, having him indicate octagons (stop signs), triangles (yield signs) and rectangles (speed limit signs). Older children can name three-dimensional shapes such as pyramids and spheres that they spot along the way. Classroom and Home Worksheets Present Math on the Cheap
It’s not necessary to shell out a lot of money to have superior educational material for your youngster. Believe it or not, nearly all dollar stores currently have complete sections dedicated to puzzle and picture instruction books that can help make studying enjoyable. There are lots of internet sites with printable puzzles and worksheets you could download for free. To save you a stop at the store, we have looked at multiple websites offering free, high-quality math worksheets that you may print all by yourself.
