Hubbs researcher joins world's elite explorers
Brent Stewart, a senior researcher at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in San Diego, has been invited to join an exclusive group that includes astrophysicist Carl Sagan, explorer Sir Edmund Hillary and astronaut Wally Schirra with his selection as a recipient of the 2011 Lowell Thomas Award.
Stewart received the award from the Explorers Club in recognition of “his decades of cutting-edge and pioneering research that has put us closer than ever before to understanding the mysterious whale shark and other migratory marine species at precisely the time conservation measures are needed to ensure their survival.”
Founded in New York City in 1904, the Explorers Club promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences. Club members have been responsible for several famous firsts: First to the North Pole, first to the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean, first to the surface of the moon.
The club periodically presents the Thomas Award to people have distinguished themselves in the field of exploration.
Stewart has conducted research in some of the world’s most remote locations including polar, temperate and tropical seas and also the ocean abyssal floor and on Russia’s Lake Baikal – the world’s oldest and deepest lake.
His pioneering research includes tracking the world’s largest seal (southern elephant seal), the world’s largest fish (whale shark) and the world’s oldest and biggest marine reptile (leatherback sea turtle) through the use of satellite-linked transmitters that provide data on oceanographic parameters as well as animal behavior.
Working from field sites in West Papua, the Maldives, Western Australia, and Kenya, Stewart currently is conducting a whale shark research program. Hubbs officials said the project is the largest of its kind in the world and aims to advance the conservation of the species by documenting the sharks’ population genetics, habitat use, migratory and diving behavior.

It is the ocean's deepest spot. The forbidding place, known as the Challenger Deep, is so far removed from the warming rays of the sun that its temperature hovers near freezing. EXPLORER The bathyscaphe Trieste plumbed the Challenger Deep in 1960.

At 35797 feet, Challenger Deep is the deepest known point in the oceans. It is so deep that, if you were able to place Mount Everest inside of the valley, there would still be 6811 feet of water separating it from the surface. At just 7000 feet down,
