Key: Sufficiently gripping

The beginning of the film has a quote by Wayne Dyer that says ‘what comes out of you when you are squeezed is what is inside you'… the real personality or behaviour of a person comes out only when he is placed in a stressful situation and that's the film's story in a nutshell. Key is a 1-hour 45-minute gripping and a taut drama by a debutant director who drives this drama from a restricted space. In a reasonably spacious closed room that looks like a cubicle, armed with a security guard, the mood is one of suspicion and mendacity. Eight people giving bizarre looks at an empty sheet of paper placed before them, listening to an invigilator who is spelling out instructions with precision and clarity. They assemble and are ready for an exam that will determine who is most qualified for a job in a company. The selection is important for surviving in the job and process consumes ninety minutes.

As the invigilator (Jagapati Babu) leaves the room and the time starts ticking, each person, one by one gets disqualified and as the interplay between the eight members begin, their machinations come alive. What is significant here is all of them have shown willingness to subject themselves to this experiment and none of them show a trace of tension as time's running out. The people, their dialogue forces one's attention right from the word go. Jagapati's baritone, his no-nonsense look is a big asset to the film, however the film demands the rest of the characters with a fresh look and it delivers. Key works due to many reasons. It has a single location, their discussion doesn't meander. The intro and the finale are highly interesting while the characters hold their separate identities. There's work for the mind too as one keeps guessing as to who's the corporate mole amongst the members.

The background score sometimes overlaps the dialogue but that's a minor glitch. Vinda's camera drives away the claustrophobia associated with the room, the setting is pretty swanky. A couple of television personalities add a dash of glamour. Nagendra does a decent job of escalating the psychological game and keeping the viewers hooked to the seat till the last.
