Maize futures up on weak deliveries

The July white maize contract gained R22 to R1,752/ton, with the September contract adding R19.80 to R1,779.80/ton and the December white maize contract picking up R17 to close at R1,830/ton, according to preliminary data.

The July yellow maize contract ended R17.80 higher at R1,707.80/ton and September yellow maize was R13 firmer at R1,738/ton. The December yellow maize contract gained R14 to R1,780/ton.

The July wheat contract edged up seven rand to R2,957/ton, but the September wheat contract lost R25 to R2,835/ton. The December wheat contract slipped R5 to R2,715/ton. "The market was fairly muted today, but weak farm deliveries still provided support. The US market, in electronic trading today, also added some positive buying," said Rudi Swanepoel, a trader at Farmwise Grains.

At 12pm, when the local grains market closed, the rand was trading at R6.69/$, unchanged from the previous session.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Board of Trade reported that the US corn market ended firmer on Thursday amid strong export news and bullish input from outside market forces, but the trade still viewed the weather over the next week as a bigger negative than the potential weather into the second week of the forecast models, which looks potentially threatening.

Traders see warm and sometimes wet weather in the Midwest as a factor that should help boost crop conditions before the crop may or may not have to endure a few days of heat.

Buying was active into the opening as a surge in equity and energy markets plus a break in the US dollar helped boost agricultural markets in general. In addition, a hotter extended forecast for the Midwest into the pollination period plus increased buying from China helped to support. Private exporters reported the sale of 540,000 tonnes of US corn for China for the 2011-12 season plus 300,000 tonnes for unknown destination.

Ethanol production for the week ending July 1 averaged 904,000 barrels per day. This was up 1.23% versus last week and up 5.73% versus last year.
