Famous gardens: A group of five women have shared their passions for gardening ...

It all started as a bridge club.

A group of young, newly married women got together to play cards in the 1960s. They also had a common interest in houseplants, and shared cuttings with one another. As they each moved into new homes, their interest grew to include planting flowers around the house.

Soon enough, their expertise caught up with their interest, and several of the women became well-known for their gardening. The women took trips together to buy plants and visit arboretums. One of them opened a nursery.

"I'd like to have a community garden but only of unusual varieties and with the sole purpose of sharing it, just to get more variety out there," she says.

Connelly's central Sioux Falls shade garden has been 30 years in the making. Standing under a magnolia tree 20 feet tall, she looks up. "That was a six-inch plant," she muses. "It's been moved a couple of times." Now its stately branches shelter a cacophony of treasured specimens in her large garden criss-crossed with stone paths.

Golden leaf spirea, angelica, fleece flower and Cimicifuga atropurpurea, a tall plant with dusky foliage and fall flowers that smell like plum blossoms, are all favorites. Digitalis Gold Heart, hardy Geranium, Martagon lilies and Lilium henryii are more beauties that populate her garden. The trees stand guard over nine different garden areas, including a perennial garden, xeriscaped patch, wild area, rock plot and a whatever garden, where everything is allowed to grow where it reseeds.

Byrne plotted out and designed her gardens on the computer, where she has each plant documented.

The goal is to have blooms from April 1 to Oct. 4, says Byrne. When she moved to the new house seven years ago, she took her garden with her. "I moved 170 plants before we even dug a hole."

She's constructed a grass reading room. A grouping of wooden chairs is surrounded on three sides by a wall of grass and by mid-summer the "room" is a private oasis.

Besides ornamental grasses, lilies, allium and cosmos are found throughout her gardens in southern Sioux Falls. She likes the layered garden look, where plants of different heights and habits are linked together through placement with cedar mulch visually linking it all. Marianne Larsen keeps an alphabetical journal of all her plants, including the scientific name, bloom time, where she bought it and if it has died, been divided or transplanted. She began the journal in 1985 and has had to recopy it three times because she runs out of room.

Digital Flower Pictures.com: Blue Hardy Geranium

Hardy Geraniums are easy to grow and will even tolerate some shade. The one thing I have learned about them is they like good drainage in the winter (like Asters). Other than that they are a care free and floriferous perennial. While none of the Hardy Geraniums get really big (they like to spread more) 'Midnight Reiter' seems to like to stay small only getting up to 8 inches tall. It does stick out in the border with the purple foliage and blue flowers.
