Tall ships to visit Ludington

“We are very excited for the residents of Ludington to have the chance to walk the decks and step back in time aboard these magnificent ships.” said Jeffrey Woods, director of operations for Lynx Educational Foundation.

Lynx and Pride of Baltimore II represent “letter of marque” Baltimore Schooners, considered to be among the finest privateer vessels ever built. Because of their swiftness and maneuverability, these ships were most effective as blockade runners and offensive weapons of war. The Privateer Lynx and Pride of Baltimore II will be offering educational ship tours and Battle Reenactment Sails, Aug. 5 to 7.

The ships will engage in a high seas battle sail reenactment and passengers will be able to smell the black powder smoke and cheer the crew on as they chase down the enemy.

The first schooner scheduled into port, the schooner Lynx, is nicknamed “America’s Privateer” and sails into Ludington for the first time at noon, Aug. 4.

The 122-foot Lynx is an interpretation of a naval schooner from the War of 1812. It is fitted with period ordnance and flies pennants and flags from the 1812 era, making it one of the first ships to defend America’s freedom.

The Lynx crew wears period dress and operates in keeping with the maritime traditions.

Students and adults will recognize the War of 1812 as a significant element of American heritage and as a turning point in the development of the country’s identity. The educational early American history and science programs that are taught aboard Lynx meet specific state standards.

The celebrated War of 1812 privateer square top sail schooner Lynx has arrived on the wast coast from Hawaii to California and is scheduled for a five-year mission along the east coast of the United States, the Great Lakes and Canada.

The Lynx operates under the Lynx Educational Foundation, a non-profit, organization, dedicated to hands-on educational programs that teach early American history. The maritime challenges during the War of 1812 are taught aboard the American Privateer Lynx with a program designed to enrich personal achievement through teamwork and the discipline of sail training.
