How can we not foster dogs?

My husband, Stewart, and I brought the first dog home in July 2007. A few of our fosters have gone with breed rescue groups and have been transported to faraway places like New Jersey and Wyoming. Most have stayed with us a few weeks while waiting for the Petsmart Rescue Waggin’ and have been taken to find homes in Colorado. Two of “our” dogs stayed with us for eight months before being adopted. The foster dog’s stay begins with an introduction to our two dogs. We always introduce Mizzi, a 30-pound terrier mix, and Percy, a 60-pound pointer /Sharpei mix, one at a time to a new foster, taking them to neutral territory away from our own yard. We then let them interact in our yard. The foster dog is then invited to live in our home, just as if it had been adopted. We expect and train for the same house manners we expect from our dogs. The foster is not allowed on beds or furniture. If it is small enough to sit on a lap, it should lie quietly. They have a place to stay while we have our meals. We crate train. The dog should go to a crate on command. All are crated during the day while we are at work, away for errands and at night. We work on housebreaking when needed. We expect the dogs to come when called and wait at the door for us to give them the go-ahead to enter or exit, usually with us in the lead. They also need to wait while we go down and up stairs before them, unless we send them forward. They need to move out of the way when we need to walk where they may be lying. Activities with the dogs include walking the neighborhood, playing in the yard and house, and taking the dog with us to a variety of places. Sadly, several dog given to our care have had no idea how to use dog toys. Happily, both of our dogs enjoy toys. Percy, especially, would play fetch all day long. We credit our first foster, a pointer, with teaching Percy to retrieve, and now he teaches others to do the same. Most dogs who stay at least a week learn not only to chase a ball but to bring it back for another toss. The short answer is, if we adopt another dog, we could no longer foster. We have two dogs of our own and are limited to three animals due to Winfield’s ordinance, so we can foster only one dog at a time. Because we enjoy the company of our own dogs, we want others to have that same opportunity. Fostering not only saves the life of the dog but also adds joy to the adopter’s family.
