Navy League displaying art work for USS Jacksonville today

The Jacksonville Council of the U.S. Navy League will display artwork today that it has commissioned for the USS Jacksonville , a Los Angeles Class fast-attack submarine based at Pearl Harbor and the first ship to bear the city's name.

The display of the decorated doors will begin at noon today in the atrium at City Hall downtown. In its press release, the Navy League said:

"In May the Navy League Jacksonville Council received a request for help from culinary specialist First Class Robert Pare, the petty officer in charge of the sub’s galley and mess deck, which doubles as meeting space and leisure time “go-to” location.  ... This young man happens to have been raised in Jacksonville, but he notes that most of the crew (13 officers, 14 chiefs, 111 enlisted) know little about and have no connection with the submarine’s namesake city.

"With the generous support of the City, Jaguars, Suns and TPC, the council has secured local memorabilia that can be displayed in the submarine’s spaces.  Moreover, the council worked with a local sign company, FASTSIGNS on Baymeadows, to decorate seven otherwise unattractive metal and plexiglass access doors on the mess deck bulkheads with images of Jacksonville.

"The Navy League council has undertaken this project as a gift to the crew of the Navy vessel that has carried Jacksonville name and represented the city around the world for the past three decades. Though the sub is in the later years of her service life, local Navy League members want the men and women who take her to sea in protecting America and her freedoms to experience her golden years in style.
