Director of Palin documentary: Critics “play into my hand”

Bannon wrote and directed “The Undefeated,” a praise-heavy documentary about the former Alaska governor and messiah of the Tea Party — a film that aims to rattle the establishment of the Republican Party as much as the Democratic Party. (The movie has been rolling out slowly around the country, and opens Friday at the Carmike Ritz 15 in West Valley City.)

In a Thursday phone interview with The Cricket (who reviewed the movie ), Bannon talked about D.C. gridlock, Sen. John McCain’s elitism, and the many critics who have attacked Gov. Palin and his movie:

I got approached from her PAC to do a series of short vignettes, or videos, for YouTube, and I turned them down. … I’ve observed her from a distance during the rise of the Tea Party, and I thought she had an amazing to connection to people, not just charisma. And I kind of got tired of all the guys I know on Wall Street and in Washington saying what a bimbo she was, what an airhead and how above her capacity she was. I had done some research and thought the story in Alaska was an incredibly compelling story of a modern-day reformer, and nobody had told it — Fox hadn’t done it, none of the conservative magazines had done it —and I thought it was a big story. It deserved to be told, and it would be incredibly gripping. … I thought it had all the elements of a great drama and a hero, and it would be an incredibly interesting film.

She had nothing to do with it. When she approached me, I came back and said my partners and I [at Victory Film Group] will put up all the money. Not only would they have no creative control, I didn’t want to interview her. If she wanted to be interviewed, it wouldn’t be the film I wanted to make, and so I wouldn’t make it.

And when you say positive, yes, I don’t have the Katie Couric interview and I don’t have Troopergate.

The Undefeated, which was written and directed by Stephen K. Bannon and produced by Bannon and Victory Film Group co-founder Glenn Bracken Evans and Dan Fleuette, chronicles Sarah Palin’s rise from obscurity to national prominence. ARC Entertainment is the film’s worldwide distributor.

The Undefeated features leading prominent political commentators Mark Levin, Tammy Bruce and Andrew Breitbart as well as conservative activists Kate Obenshein, Sonnie Johnson and Jamie Radtke. Additionally, the film features interviews with Alaskan civil servants, elected officials and advisors who were involved in Alaskan politics during Governor Palin’s tenure.
