Silva, the son of Diane Ashley of Ashtabula and Pasquale Silva of Akron, graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in September of 1998 and moved to Akron where he served his apprenticeship at Eckard-Baldwin Funeral Home before moving to Barberton to work for the Hahn-Hostetler Funeral Home. In 2002, Service Corporation International, the company that owned Hahn-Hostetler Funeral Home, decided to make Silva tgeneral manager for two of the funeral homes they owned in the area. By doing this the names of the funeral homes were changed to Hahn-Hostetler-Silva Funeral Home in Barberton and also Silva Funeral Home which was in Fairlawn. He worked for the corporation until July of 2005 when he purchased a building, which had four different business in it and renovated it into what is now the largest funeral home in the Barberton area. While working for a large corporation was not a problem in the beginning, Silva often had a hard time implementing some of the ideas that they wanted done. "What works in Houston, Texas, doesn't always work in Barberton, Ohio" Silva said. "They wanted us to charge the prices they were charging in their big cities when we live in a Blue Collar town." Chris often compares Barberton to his hometown of Ashtabula in the way that they once had a thriving area with industry and manufacturing plants that help to mold the city. But just like what happened in Ashtabula, many of the large companies closed to move south. "Rockwell and P.P.G. were major industries here in Barberton that closed and took good paying jobs with them," he said. "I had enough of the big bosses and felt that it was my responsibility to be fair to the community. I decided to take a chance and so far it has gone better than planned." Since moving to Barberton in 1999, Silva has been very active in the community where he lives with his wife Frances, who was born and raised there, and their children Mia, three and half years old, and Marco, four months old, where they are members of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the Barberton Chapter of the Red Cross, a member of MagicCity Kiwanis where he served on their Board of Directors and served one year on the Board of Directors for the Barberton Community Foundation and served on the Planning Commission for the City of Barberton for three years.
