Four honored for their outstanding contributions to UH Hilo

The University of Hawaii at Hilo honored four faculty members and staff for their dedication and outstanding contribution to the university. Chancellor Donald Straney presented the Award for Excellence in Scholarly / Creative Rebecca Ostertag, the price of the professional staff at Kolby Santiago, reward exceptional employees of the University to support Kirk Mikami Koichi Taniguchi and Taniyo and Price Excellence in Innovation for Keiki Kawai'ae'a.Ostertag is an associate professor of biology and the Award of Excellence in Scholarly / Creative. It is a very productive researcher with a prolific publication record and consistent. Ostertag said "art" to science in his teaching, including how to read primary literature, to develop independent research hypotheses, collect and analyze data and present results. She shares her love for science through his leadership and continuously receives evaluations of teaching high for its practical approach and style encouraging.Santiago is a financial aid counselor in the Student Affairs Office and the recipient of the professional staff. She advises and provides information and support for students and parents about financial aid. While the number of applications has increased dramatically since it began 10 years ago, she never complained of having double the workload. Santiago is dedicated to his work and works hard to help students receive much needed financial assistance. A true team player, Santiago really cares about students and is highly respected by all who work with her.Mikami is a bookkeeper in the business office and the recipient of the University support staff exceptional. He contributed to countless improvements to existing procedures and processes and is always trying to make operations more efficient. Mikami always shows excellent customer service to everyone he works with. Whenever a problem arises, he takes the initiative to take possession of it and follows through to resolution. His attitude is that everyone can pull together UH Hilo a better place to work and a better place for students to get a real education.
