For League City family, focus goes to the dogs

When 9-year-old Madison Williams completed her first turn in the show ring as a junior handler at the Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows, her great-aunt, Jeri McClure, of St. Louis, was full of advice and praise.

She should know. The retired schoolteacher has been showing dogs for 40 years.

"It was a lot harder than I thought," said Madison, who lives in League City. "I was nervous."

Madison was showing Norwich terrier Reggie, one of McClure's show dogs.

"Reggie knows what to do," said Madison's twin sister, Megan, who made her handler debut earlier during the Houston show. "Reggie is the expert."

This year, 11,033 dogs are participating in the 34th annual Houston dog show, which draws about 40,000 visitors and participants for five days of competition. Best-in-show winners were named Friday; more best-in-show winners will be awarded today and Sunday.

In addition to breed judging, the Reliant show features agility, flyball and obedience demonstrations; a marketplace; student art exhibit; and a chance for visitors to get up close to different dogs in the Meet the Breed area.

Dogs filling Reliant Center range from poodles and golden retrievers to more unusual breeds such as Beaucerons, Finnish Lapphunds, Portuguese Podengo Pequenos and Peruvian Inca Orchids.

There's a mix of professional handlers and amateurs showing their beloved pets.

Morgan Williams, Madison and Megan's older sister, showed a wire fox terrier named Bruce, the family dog. Ten-year-old Morgan has participated in about 20 competitions. She thinks dog handling is easier than it looks on TV but concedes it may be because Bruce is special to her.

"He sleeps on my bed," she said.

McClure remembers when the girls would play "dog show" at home and thinks it is fabulous they have become involved in competition.
