Ferndale's Superfeet redesigns packaging of insole products

The new look maintains Superfeet's traditional colored packaging, but sets it apart from the sporty design of the company's Trim-to-Fit products, according to a company press release. The current patented trio of insoles includes a men's flat, a women's flat for footwear one-inch or lower, and a women's high heel for footwear with a heel one-inch or higher.

Superfeet originally introduced the Easy-Fit High Heel insole in 2000 under the name Footnotes, providing the marketplace with the first lightweight insert to relieve pressure and toe crowding in high-heeled shoes.

Earlier this week Ferndale-based Superfeet Worldwide Inc. released the Superfeet FLP, a biomechanical sandal based on the same podiatric design and construction as their supportive Trim-to-Fit insole line.

The FLP features an asymmetrical strap, men's and women's gender-specific shape, and orthotic device built into the core of the midsole, according to a company press release.

Research and development on the FLP was sparked by consumers requesting a biomechanical solution for open-toed footwear. The new sandal will offer users a supportive and fitted alternative to most flat footwear usually worn in the summer months, in warm climates, or when wearing closed shoes is not an option.

Whatcom County manufacturing moving forward in stagnant economy

Trying to move an entire company into a new building in two days with the weather Whatcom County has had lately is no small feat, but Superfeet's Randy Curran said fortune was on their side.

"The weather was actually kind to us," said Curran, adding the company started the move into its new 50,000-square-foot Ferndale facility on Thursday, March 3, and was mostly done by Saturday, March 5. "It's remarkable how smooth it went."

Fortune appears to be smiling on many Whatcom County manufacturers in the first part of 2011, particularly when compared to the rest of the local economy. In January the manufacturing industry employed 7,800 people, up 300 compared to a year earlier. That's well ahead of the local construction industry's workforce of 5,100. During the real estate boom a few years ago, construction at times employed significantly more people than manufacturing.

Flat footedness is a very serious and painful condition. You really need to consult a podiatrist. They can take impressions of your feet and have orthotics made specifically for your feet. Brace yourself though, they cost about $300 and your insurance may or may not pay for them. Good Luck
