Dog Grooming Tools – What do I need? - Dogs 101
Thin Coats – Dogs with thin coats are single coated. This means they do not have an undercoat and their fur generally tends to be more delicate than most dogs. A pin brush is ideal for dogs with thin coats. They have metal pins that are attached to a soft metal base. Make sure you choose a brush that will not scratch your dog’s delicate skin. Use a metal comb after you brush with the pin brush. Be sure to brush when the hair is dry. Wet coats will make the fur weaker and can result in hair loss and/or damage. Long, Flowing Coats – These dogs have a top coat that should be brushed with a high quality bristle brush. These types of brushes will give your dog’s coat a polished shine when used regularly. The undercoat of these dogs should be combed with an undercoat rake regularly. Wiry Coats – Use a high quality, firm pin brush for dogs with wiry coats. Bristles should be closely spaced. Smooth Short Coats – Use a firm bristle brush to remove excess fur and to prevent shedding. Rough Outer Coats/Soft Undercoats – Use a pin brush to remove loose fur on the outer coat. Use an undercoat rake to remove loose hair. Do not press too hard to prevent scratching your dog’s skin. Guidelines on How Often to Brush your Dog
Many dogs love to have their hair brushed. Hair brushing helps to maintain a healthy coat. How often you brush your dog’s hair will depend on the length of his hair. Here are some guidelines to help you decide on how often to brush his hair.
Long Hair – Dogs with long hair will require a daily brushing. This will help to prevent matting and tangling. Medium Hair – Dogs with medium hair may not need a daily brushing. However, their hair can actually get tangled and matted; therefore, they should be brushed on a weekly basis. Short Hair – Dogs with short hair can actually be brushed once a month. Dog Nail Grooming ToolsTrimming your dog’s nails is an essential step for dog ownership. This is not something your dog will like; however, it is critical that you take the time to trim his nails to prevent breakage. You need to learn how to trim your dog’s nails properly in order to prevent him from being hurt during nail trimming. There are many different dog nail grooming tools available. The majority of dogs will need their nails trimmed monthly.
